School of LawSchool of Law (SL) was established on July 16, 2004, on the basis of the former Law Department of School of Humanities and Social Science, SCUT. In SCUT, the specialty of Law was first instituted in 1993, which began to recruit undergraduate students in 1995, dual B.A. degree students in 1999, and graduate students in 2002. (Dual degree students simultaneously major in two specialties and are granted two B.A. degrees upon graduation). In November 2004, the School founded School of Intellectual Property Rights in conjunction with Guangdong Provincial Intellectual Property Office. In 2005, the School was authorized to confer the Master degree in the level-1 discipline of Jurisprudence which began to recruit graduate students in 2007. In the same year, Guangdong Research Center for Local Laws, a key base for humanities and social sciences research in Guangdong Province, was set up on this campus. Over the past years, the School has attracted a large number of brilliant young and middle-aged scholars and professionals to form a highly committed faculty, which currently includes 9 professors and 12 associate professors. Faculty members holding a doctoral degree account for nearly 86% of the total. In addition to full-time teachers, the School engages over 10 guest-chair professors from among nationally reputed law experts, professional judges and lawyers. At present, the School has a student population of 1,300, composed of postgraduate students of Law and Jurisprudence, undergraduate students of Jurisprudence as well as students minoring in Jurisprudence. Each year, 12% of the new graduates can be entitled to enter a graduate school without passing an entrance exam. Undergraduates at school can simultaneously major in two specialties in order to obtain dual B.A. degrees. Scholarships and scientific research awards are available to students who have good performance but have economic difficulty or students who are distinguished for scientific achievements. Relying on SCUT’s affluent resources, this School plans to develop within three years into an influential law school in China, and a leading one in Guangdong province by actively building innovative law education bases, constructing key disciplines, and emphasizing students education quality. |
